While pathogenesis takes a reactive approach to treating what’s wrong in the body, salutogenesis takes a proactive approach to adopting health-promoting behaviours. It assumes the premise that wellness is something that should be actively pursued and put effort into.

Salutogenesis has been applied to guide health promotion research and practice in various settings. The enclosed chapters review this literature separately for the settings of community/neighborhood, city, restorative environments, school, university, work, workers in prisons, and organizations contained in this section. The salutogenic approach tries to strengthen the ‘hidden harmony’ of health. Antonovsky emphasized that there was clearly a “complementary relationship” between a pathogenic and a salutogenic orientation. He argued for “a more balanced allocation of intellectual and material resources” to both approaches (Antonovsky, 1987, p.13).

Salutogenesis is the origins of health and focuses on factors that support human health and well-being, rather than on factors that cause disease (pathogenesis). More specifically, the "salutogenic model" was originally concerned with the relationship between health, stress, and coping through a study of holocaust survivors. Despite going through the dramatic tragedy of the holocaust, some survivors were able to thrive later in life. While pathogenesis takes a reactive approach to treating what’s wrong in the body, salutogenesis takes a proactive approach to adopting health-promoting behaviours. It assumes the premise that wellness is something that should be actively pursued and put effort into. The medical sociologist Aron Antonovsky (1979) proposed an approach termed ‘salutogenesis,’ a theory of how and why certain people stay healthy.
